Proofreading: A thorough review of a manuscript for errors, but not just misplaced apostrophes or typos – it’s a check that the entire document makes sense. That means looking for incorrect word usage, checking the grammar, removing any plot holes/continuity errors, making sure formatting is consistent, and many other things besides.
Copyediting: As well as fixing any gremlins, a copyedit involves improving the text. This includes removing things like unnecessary repetition or inconsistency, changing the language to improve readability, and looking for ways to help the text ‘flow’ better by suggesting changes to the structure.
