A tale of exile, ambition and love in a fictional Russian family during the decade after the 1917 revolution, from Russia to Persia, Anatolia, Constantinople and France. At its heart, a child and the two women who love him: Esther, daughter of an oil-rich Russian family from Baku on the Caspian coast, who never loses her determination to play the piano on the concert platform despite her love for the Turkish officer who facilitates her family’s journey over rugged terrain, and Anahid, a Turkish Armenian rescued from a Persian harem by Esther.
